(16) $4,745,913 to design and repair bridges located within Greenwood County, including but not limited to, the bridges located on: Bedford Road, Cowhead Creek Road, Dendy Bridge Road, Fairforest Drive, Jordan Road, Ridge Road, Scotts Ferry Road, Sumter Forest Road, and Watson Hill Road;
Project Overview
There are approximately 1,270 miles of roadway in our county that facilitate the movement of goods, people, and services around our area. While the South Carolina Department of Transportation maintains the major roadways and bridges throughout the county, the Greenwood County Road Department maintains 329 miles of roadway and eleven bridges. These roadways and bridges typically serve residential subdivisions and the more rural areas of the county. They provide vital access to large tracts of land essential to the agricultural and forestry industries as well as residences, businesses, and recreational activities.
The Greenwood County Public Works Road Department proposes to perform major repairs or completely replace nine of the eleven bridges that it maintains. The age, type, design, and condition of the bridges has necessitated this work.
The nine bridges are currently maintained by the Greenwood County Public Works Road Department. The Road Department is funded almost entirely by a road fee imposed on vehicle property taxes. The current fee as of July 1, 2023, is $26 per vehicle and generates approximately $1.5 million per year. The bulk of this funding is applied to salaries, materials, equipment, and services to maintain over 329 miles of roadway, 11 bridges, and various other drainage structures associated with the roadways.
