(20) $17,151,605 for design, construction, equipping, etc. of an indoor recreational facility to be owned and operated by the Greenwood County Parks and Recreation Department, to be located within, or around, the Wilbanks Sports Complex;
Project Overview
Currently, Basketball and Volleyball programs are required to utilize other gyms such as Boys and Girls Club, Greenwood School System, and Housing Authority facilities. This limits the availability of program scheduling by limiting the number of practices and games due to availability of gym space. We propose building a new state-of-the-art indoor facility at the Greenwood Wilbanks Recreation Complex. This facility will complete the overarching vision outlined in the Greenwood Wilbanks Recreation Complex master plan and will serve as a pivotal component, contributing to the overall enhancement of the complex’s infrastructure and functionality. The new indoor facility will allow for expanded programming opportunities, which means a broader range of activities and services’ tailored to meet the diverse needs and interests of the Greenwood community. The proposed facility will also position Greenwood as a hub for hosting tournaments and events, attracting participants and spectators alike. This not only elevates the community’s profile but also generates potential economic benefits through increased tourism and local engagement. Basketball and Volleyball sports participation has doubled in the last three years.
