(5) $1,611,879 for the upgrades/improvements to Fire Station # 1 owned by and located within the City of Greenwood;

Project Overview

Greenwood City Fire Department Station One was constructed in 1964. Since then, the building has undergone only minor reconstruction to the building to add three offices for each Shift’s Battalion Chief, a cover over the rear balcony, a truck exhaust collection system and minor kitchen modifications.

The remainder of the building layout has been left mostly unchanged. Over the years, the plumbing has been extensively patched for leaks and added on to for new equipment such as a dishwasher and a gear extractor. Greenwood City Fire Department’s operations and needs have also changed since 1964. The department is training on a wider variety of emergency situations, including technical rescue and medical calls; covering a larger geographical area; and has recently has added a joint agreement to run automatic aid with the County of Greenwood.

All of this equates to a higher call volume; which entails more stress, less sleep, and higher levels of required training on Greenwood City firefighters. Studies have shown that a fire station’s ergonomics play a major role in the firefighters’ ability to reduce stress, get adequate sleep, and create a safer work environment. Sleep deprivation has been apart of numerous workplace accidents, depression, and cardiac health issues in fire departments across the nation. Greenwood City Fire Department is seeking CPST funding for modifications to Station One that will improve ergonomics, safety, and bring Station One into the 21st century.

The improvements will also help relieve continual plumbing repair cost. Improvements to Station One include updating the classroom area and the existing bunkroom area to better suite the sleeping arrangements and storage needs of our firefighters. It will include modifying the communal bathroom into four private restrooms, a janitorial closet, and laundry facilities. The kitchen will be remodeled to aid with storage and adequate seating, as well, as a private training room to be added in the day room area. The current server room will be relocated and the lobby expanded. The current laundry room area downstairs will be modified to include a decon shower. Finally, all lighting and plumbing throughout the station will be modernized, as well as, restructuring the front facade of the building.
